Web desk: In a stunning turn of events, Ireland pulled off one of the greatest upsets in modern cricket history by defeating reigning World Champions India by 34 runs in the first T20 International. This historic victory marks the Irish team's first-ever win against India in international cricket.
The opening match of the two-T20I series, played in Belfast, saw the hosts outclass the visitors in both departments to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
After being put into bat, Ireland posted a challenging total
of 182 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.
The innings was anchored by a spectacular captain's knock
from Lorcan Tucker, who smashed a brilliant 50. He was ably supported by
Gareth Delany, who’s aggressive 49-run cameo provided the crucial
late-innings impetus to push the Irish total past the 180-mark, setting a
formidable target for the formidable Indian batting lineup.
Chasing 183 for victory, the World Champions' powerhouse
batting lineup crumbled under relentless pressure from the Irish bowling
attack. India's innings never found its rhythm, and the entire team was bowled
out for a meagre 148 runs in the 19th over.
Opener Abhishek
Sharma was the sole bright spot for India, blistering 49 runs off just 20
balls.
Apart from Sharma, no
other Indian batter could withstand the disciplined Irish attack, leading to a
swift and unexpected collapse.
The star of the evening was Ireland's debutant fast bowler, Matthew
Hollard. Playing his first international match, Hollard bowled with
incredible composure, ripping through the Indian lineup to claim 3 wickets.
His game-changing spell earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match
award.
With this commanding 34-run victory, Ireland has not only
rewritten the record books but also set up a thrilling finale for the second
and final match of the series.
